7 Tips for Disinfecting Your office

May 8, 2020
The outbreak of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) highlights the need for offices to be cleaned and disinfected to reduce the spread of germs and infections.

What is the Difference Between Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfecting?

Cleaning a surface can only remove visible dirt, debris, and dust. On the other hand, sanitizing a surface can make it free of visible dirt pollutants that could negatively affect your health. Sanitizing is only meant to reduce the growth of viruses, bacteria, and fungi and not to kill them. Disinfecting a surface can kill the microscopic organisms.

Here are seven tips for disinfecting your office.

  1. Use a one-way wipe down: In this method, you have to wipe down a surface in one direction without going back in the reverse direction to avoid depositing germs again on the surface that were just cleaned up. Wipe down all repeatedly touched surfaces such as countertops, workstations, and doorknobs.
  2. Practice color-coded cleaning: Color code cleaning clothes for specific areas so janitorial staff doesn’t cross-contaminate while disinfecting.
  3. Understand the chemicals you are using: Common household disinfectants claim to kill 99.9 percent of viruses and bacteria, including human coronavirus, E. coli, flu strains, and salmonella, among others on their label. Be aware of what these chemicals can eliminate and what they cannot.
  4. Disinfect tech items: Make sure to disinfect all the tech items you use in your offices like desktops, keyboards, mouse, printers, fax, and phone.
  5. Promote handwashing & hand sanitizer use: You can post handwashing signs around the office to remind staff to clean their hands with soap or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. The hand sanitizer you use should have at least 60 to 95 percent alcohol. Make sure employees use soap with warm water and wash their hands for at least 20 seconds.
  6. Use Quality Cleaning Products: Remember, cleaning up your office frequently cannot benefit a lot if you are using inferior cleaning products. Therefore, make sure to use high-quality cleaning products that can kill the germs. At the same time, ensure that it doesn’t have any harmful effects on humans.
  7. Consider hiring a disinfection service: Sometimes minimizing the spread of germs in your office is not easy. Consider hiring a professional disinfection service to make sure that your office is appropriately cleaned, sanitized, and all the frequently touched surfaces are disinfected.
